Last chance for new PHIT sketch classes

05/08/2009

Last week we told you about some of the great improv class offerings the PHILLY IMPROV THEATER has starting up this month. Well another exciting PHIT venture we’re seeing recently is the rise of sketch writing classes. Whether you’re looking to pen your comedy genius for the stage or the screen, the fine folks at PHIT have you covered with some serious teaching talent:

LEVEL 1: INTRO TO SKETCH WRITING w/ PAUL TRIGGIANI

This is the place to start if you have never written sketch comedy before, or have dabbled in the past. Over eight weeks, students will watch and discuss a variety of sketches, learn about different sketch formats, and write and workshop their own material. The focus in Level 1 is on developing each student’s individual voice and comic sensibility. The class will conclude with established comedians performing a staged reading of students’ favorite sketches.

The end product for this class will be an actual spec script for a 30-minute television sitcom.

A Farewell to Bad Hair Sketch Comedy

01/26/2009

This Thursday when the members of Bad Hair take the stage, it may only be their 4th time playing this annual show, but it will be their final night in a long line of laughs.

The sketch comedy group has been a steady fixture on the local scene for many years, having performed at the Adrienne, Trocadero, Painted Bride, the Khyber, World Cafe Live and many other venues throughout the city. They’ve launched many successful runs of Fringetastic Sketchtacular for the Philly Fringe and were most recently seen at the Philly SketchFest.

Thursday night will be presented as Best Of… featuring a selection memorable favorites from past shows.

Philly Sketchfest ’08 This Weekend!

06/04/2008

This weekend marks a special first in Philadelphia’s alt-comedy scene. Dave Terruso, Matt Lally & Ben Maher have come together to produce Philadelphia’s first ever Philly Sketchfest, running this Friday and Saturday at the Painted Bride.

Over the last year, events like Die Actor Die and Bedtime Stories have created not only awesome comedy, but also some excited networking between the city’s sketch comedians. The result is a culmination of talent featuring eight groups taking the stage in what promises to be two nights of exciting hilarity.

The event is hosted by comic Chip Chantry (Ministry of Secret Jokes) and features sketch groups Animosity Pierre, Bad Hair, the Gentleman’s Rotary Auxiliary, Meg & Rob, Rowan & Hastings, Secret Pants, the Sixth Borough and the Waitstaff.

Tapestry Theatre In the Spark Showcase

07/13/2007

Tapestry Theatre is set to participate in the TAGP 3rd annual Spark Showcase: an evening of 10 minute plays.

Through the 15th, the Painted Bride Art Center will be the setting to get your sneak peak of upcoming theatre projects in ten minute bursts. Our friends at Tapestry Theatre, Karen Getz and Kelly Jennings, have put together a fun little adventure entitled Cecily and Gwendolyn’s Fantastical Balloon Ride: A Journey Through Time and Space in a Hot Air Balloon. Like their much beloved show, Killer Pussy, this piece is entirely improvised; drawing on inspiration from the audience to not only create the show, but to take leading role in the developing story. This piece continues Tapestry’s exploration of the intersection between improvisational and scripted theatre.
